Course Description

This is a wide scope course, whose objective is to equip students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them assist the Communities to identify their development concerns and stimulate fresh thinking processes at the grass root level to enable communities transform themselves consciously and fundamentally into more capable managers of their activities.

 

Course Structure

The course is divided in to two categories depending on course duration and examination body. The categories are professional courses and short courses.

Professional courses

Professional courses in social work and community development are examinable by KNEC and take a long duration of study. The professional courses are listed below.

A. Certificate

Certificate course in social work takes 2 years of study. The course is examined by KNEC and the minimum grade required for this course is D plain in KCSE. The course is done in two modules;

  • Craft module 1: takes one year equivalent to 3 terms
  • Craft module 2: takes one year equivalent to 3 terms

B. Diploma

A diploma course in social work and community development takes 3 years of study. The course is examinable by KNEC and the minimum grade required for this course is C- (minus). The course is done in 3 modules

  • Diploma module 1: takes 1 year equivalent to 3 terms
  • Diploma module 2: takes 1 year equivalent to 3 terms
  • Diploma module 3: takes 1 year equivalent to 3 terms

Short Courses

The short courses in community development and social work are those that are trained and examined by Uwezo College. These courses take between 2-3 months study duration. They include;

  • Proposal writing skills
  • Community Leadership and administration skills
  • Project planning, monitoring and evaluation skills
  • Community mobilization and fundraising skills
  • Community empowerment and capacity building skills
  • Counseling psychology
  • Community health and home-based care.
  • Disaster management skills.
